I flatly don't believe it!
Saw this in a friend's LJ and simply had to try it. Her reading level was 9th grade, BTW. Sigh...guess I'm not such an intellectual as I thought. Except...if this is my writing level, how come the adults my own age with whom I work frequently have difficulty comprehending my writing...oh, sorry. Silly question...

but look at your average number of syllables per word... that's probably why you're at 8th grade...
anyway, don't feel so badly... newspapers in this country are intentionally written at a *fourth* grade reading level (well other than the NYT but that's a paper only for us elitist snobbish intellectuals *wink*).

Hey! This says my journal is grade level 4! I'm not in 4th grade!
The grade level given by the formula does not indicate the education level of the writer. It indicates at what grade level the reader's comprehension must be at for them to understand the text. So if your journal has a low grade level, it means you have written it in a very clear and easy-to-understand manner.

Given that you're a tech writer and what you write needs to be understood by a wide audience, it doesn't surprise me at all that you're at 8th grade... and another note from the meme says that the standard is full of flaws and meant as a guideline.
If all else fails, take comfort in the fact that the sample of *my* journal that it analyzed came in at the sixth grade!
